Grace Darling was the daughter of William Darling, a lighthouse keeper. In those days most girls worked in the home, but Grace was unusual – when she grew up she worked with her father instead. The family went to live in the Longstone Lighthouse, off the coast of Northumberland, and Grace helped her father guard and maintain the light.
